I'm trying some jeans on that I ordered from Asos and one pair just ripped while I was trying them on (actually it was while I was taking them off). They are a slim fit pair, so quite hard to slide off. I pulled at the bottom of the leg, no harder than I normally would, and the fabric itself (not a seam) just tore. There's now about a 3 inch long tear.

Anyone got experience with this? Obviously my view is that they're not fit for purpose and I don't want to have to pay, but if I send them back damaged jeans surely they're going to charge me?

Do these jeans have holes or are otherwise "distressed"?

Just say they were like that when delivered.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

They don't come with full on holes but they're quite heavily washed to the extent that some of the edges of the seams have frayed fabric etc.

In that case they are distressed and therefore will have weaknesses in the denim so you should take more car when taking them off as tears may be inevitable. I'm not sure you're going to have much look with this I'm afraid.

I had a similar issue with a top I bought from them, I took pictures on my phone and messaged them about it, they said it was fine to return and I was refunded.

Op I think being honest and explaining exactly what happened may be your best bet. I certainly wouldn't go in all guns blazing quoting rights and suggesting the item isn't fit for purpose.

Please, do enlighten us as to how the jeans should be removed?

Also, if tears are 'inevitable' then the product clearly isn't of satisfactory quality.

Not in the way the OP has clearly described. If you go out of your way to buy distressed jeans then the expectation is they're not going to be as "strong" as a standard pair of jeans clearly because they've already been artificially damaged by design.
