Need to purchase a new car battery, the one I am looking for is an 005L.

The one on the car at the moment is a Proline PL2040, 12v, 60Ah, CCA 480.

Car is 1996 Toyota Carina E, petrol 1.6.

Would I be better looking for a higher CCA and/or Ah

What would be the best manufacture bearing in mind that some sellers re badge under their own name?

I seem to recollect that YUASA was said to be a reputable brand. Is this correct?

Looking at this page. Does anyone know this supplier?

Euro car parts have a 50% sale on batteries at the moment. Not sure how the prices stack up though.

CCA - Cold Cranking Amps - is the maximum that the battery can deliver in one go. Since the starter motor determines the amount it uses, same as any other electrical device does, so long as CCA is above the starter's draw, there's no issue.

Ah - Amp/hours - is the "amount the tank holds". Are you in the habit of leaving lights on with the engine not running?

Looking at a typical fitment guide, it could be an 005L or an 048 battery.

Does your old one say which? If not, get the tape out. The difference is the width - 048 is ~130mm wide, 005L is ~170mm wide. Both are ~230mm long and ~225mm tall, with the same terminal layout.

When you figure out which size code you need, compare batteries of that size code - it doesn't matter what car they're being sold as fitting.

Don't leave lights on but it has started losing charge, 3 weeks ago with negative lead off, charge at 12.56v, after 10 days it was showing 11.8v, I refitted lead but when trying to start it was completely dead, tested battery again, down to 10.2, charged for 40 minutes on a fast charge then car started

03rd January, charged, (left leads connected, nothing switched on), battery to 12.52v.
    04th January, 10v
    05th January, 8.3v

When putting in my reg it is coming up as 005L, although I do seem to recollect several years ago the 048 coming up, using your link it is showing as 048.

I think the one on the car now, (fitted around 4 years ago), was 005L, but it did seem taller as it was a devil to fit height wise.
    Dimensions of one on car now: L 230. W 170. H 200.

Example of an 048, but is a lot lower Ah and CCA as the one fitted. Can't find starter motor draw.

  • Definitely Tayna batteries - much cheaper than ECP even with the discount. Just bought 1 for Honda Jazz £51 delivered next day. Brilliant service.

Sounds like an 005, the height is 225mm including terminals.

Just get a Yuasa ybx3005 or ybx5005 from Tayna, Double check the terminals are the right way round from the data sheet.

Tayna also sell the Powerline 005L if you made a typo with Proline.

(I have nothing to do with Tayna, except I've bought a couple of batteries off them, and they appeared to be genuine ones, and fast delivery)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

In my experience the battery code is useless!

Halford recomends a 013 for my Megane, others a 063, Halfords - Yuasa HSB013, which is almost double the price of Tayna and a lower Ah rating.

The battery on my car is a 100, which just fits, so that is what I have odered.
Buying a larger batter does mean extra weight, but that probably has little effect.
It depends on your lifestyle, do you go camping, are you keeping the car, does it always start first time ...

On a 23 year old car, it's not really worth buying a battery that will last another 20 years.

I bought a cheap "Lion" battery 5 years ago from Euro car parts and it has lasted fine.

Seems you forgot to put the discount code in. Knocks the price down to less than half.

The one with a 4 year warranty Yuasa not the cheaper 1 year warranty one is just £57.
