Old Style Daily Saturday 5th January

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Good morning everyone :hello:
It's very chilly here this morning so I will go and put the heating on for a bit in a minute.
Sorry I haven't been around but I have been proper poorly and ended up in hospital for a few nights with double pneumonia and congestive heart failure. After much tantrumming (not really) they let me home to recover as I didn't get hardly any rest on the ward. I am on antibiotics to get rid of the infection and I have a new appreciation for breathing.
Steve and the kids coped ok but we all missed each other so much. I was lucky to have lots of visitors which kept me distracted although my grandson was very upset so I will be giving him extra cuddles later on when he comes to see me. I desperately need to have a wash and get some clean clothes on but I will wait until everyone is up.
I will be looking for heart healthy recipes later on, I have also decided for now not to tell the kids about the heart failure as they would only panic and there has been enough trauma over the past few days. My plan is to get as much weight off as possible and hopefully that will help me feel a bit more comfortable.
So, I don't know, I disappear for a few days and there is new baby news, threesomes, chilly dogs and comfy chairs :rotfl:. I was so happy to read everyone's news but sad for the not so good news. Sending special hugs to taff, poppy and especially Holly and everyone else who has been hit with a health bombshell.
Right, heating and a cup of tea is what I need to I will say bye for now xx0 -
Morning folks and thanks DUMPLING for starting us off. I am so sorry you have been so ill. Let's hope now you are back home that you will convalesce better, with all your lovely family's support.
I know DUMPLING, it was all happening on here yesterday I don't ever remember so many posts in one day. Some good news, some bad news and lots of virtual support winging back and forth.
I had my usual rubbish night with my inbuilt alarm going off at 3.00 as usual. I changed my relaxing cd from the Reiki music to Snatam Kaur but even her soothing voice didn't send me back to sleep.
I haven't done a sm shop since before Xmas and I am full of determination to keep eating from the store cupboard and freezers. But I am in need of some f & v, milk and yogurt so must pop pop down town in a while and re-stock. I may even live dangerously and catch the bus to the next little town along and have a browse round their big Co-op. We don't have a Co-op anymore but, there again, we don't have much of anything anymore! The final straw was when our M & S shut down last Spring.
Have a good day folks if you can and ((HUGS)) as always for all the poorlies, sad, worried or lonely. Especially HOLLY, TAFF, POPPY and now DUMPLING. Take care all xxx"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
Hello Dumpling, that must have been very scary. Good to hear that you are home now and I'm sending you positive thoughts to help your recovery.
I am sitting here enjoying the peace and quiet, before the rest of the world wakes up - at least that is what I was doing but people seem to have started going to work now.
My family Is helping me to decluttering by eating their Christmas treats. They have left out the wrappers so that I can see just how much they have helped in this way. So thoughtful.
Today I need to do yet another bathroom clean, it seems that someone or sometwo has a special mission involving soapy water and the floor. Soon I'll reach the point where I snap and start berating them but am not quite there yet as I do seem to spend quite a lot of time asking them to please put rubbish in the bin, please bring down your washing, do you really want to keep that piece of scrap paper as a special souvenir, please take your washing up through to the kitchen etc. I am becoming a nag.
Once I've beaten this place into submission and OH has been shopping, I have trauma teddies to knit and books to read.
Wishing everyone as good a day as possible.I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back0 -
Good morning, it seems dry and cold again here.
Thank you dumpling for starting off, sorry to hear you've been so poorly, I hope you're feeling a bit more comfortable now. You don't get any rest in hospital do you, there's something going on all the time.
Saying that, when I was in hospital 3 years ago, I was in a new part of the hospital and had my own room and shower etc, it was lovely.
Yesterday was same old same old, and a friend visited last night.
Today, who knows what might await me ,I might go out there in my winter coat and find it's brilliant sunshine and 30 degrees!! If only. Never mind, enough waffle,
Take care folks.0 -
Good morning all.
Dumpling - what an awful time for you. Hope you're well on the way to recovering.
No matter when I go to bed, early or late, I sleep soundly only to wake up around 6am. No lie in, ever, though I don't get up so early.
No idea what's happening today. I don't need to buy anything as there's plenty in the fridge and freezer. Buying my new chair was a large expense so I need to keep my purse firmly closed.
I'm not going down to Glasgow this weekend, DM insisted on me having a rest. Her fridge is stocked up and a friend will collect her Saturday paper. Part of me feels guilty whilst other parts of me feel good.
Now I wish everyone a very happy Saturday.0 -
Morning everyone
dumpling - thanks for starting us off, sorry you've been so poorly, hope you're starting to feel better, home and your own surroundings always helps recovery I find x
Hugs to those that want/need one x
Happy birthday to those with a birthday x
DH and myself enjoying first peaceful cuppas, although I'm showered, dressed and just finished brekkie as I'm working this morning.
Dinner last night was chicken and bacon kievs, chips/jacket potatoes, beans/veg for the menfolk. I had mushroom omelette and salad. Tonight I'm not sure but we have plenty in so can find something I'm sure.
Yesterday I was quite productive, I did get loads of wash loads done and nearly found the bottom of the dirty wash basket, I think there's another load of work clothes in there now, so will put that on in a minute.
Keep safe and well x

Morning :hello:
Sorry to read your news taff xx I hope you get the nice nurse and not the grumpy cow

dp1 Congratulations! xx
I'm glad Holly's op went well but sorry to hear she's feeling low. Thanks for letting us know Nels x
dumpling  I'm glad you're OK, take it easy! x
Scamp's coat velcroes together behind his front legs, it's quite a wide piece of material but if it was any wider he'd soak it every time he needed a wee
I can't find one that fits perfectly, maybe he's just an odd shape, lol.
I've rummaged through the freezers and filled the kitchen one. I've left a gammon out to defrost, I'll cook that tomorrow then slice and freeze it in portions. There's load of chopped tomatoes, mince and mash so next week I'll get stuck in to making cheesy mash, cottage pies and pasta meals - perfect winter comfort food

It's very cold again this morning, I feel like hiding under a blanket on the sofa all day. But we'll go for a walk, potter about doing housework then after lunch I'll get the diary out and organise myself a bit. Then hide under a banket

Good morning all
Thank you for starting us off dumpling, sorry to hear you've not been well, take care.
taff sorry to hear your news
Thoughts also with Holly, thanks for the update Nels, and Poppy
Love the chair GERS, my idea of heaven, comfy chair and a warm stove.
This morning we are going to visit mother as we didn't go Wednesday. Going to make some lentil and red pepper soup before we leave home so something quick and warm for lunch when we get back.
Ordered some warm pj's from D*benhams should have collected them today but they said order delayed and an hour later email to say cancelled  Wish I had ordered from JL but now out of stock.
Need to get breakfast and get going
Take care allIf you walk at night no-one will see you cry.0 -
Dumpling, hugs ((( ))) Sorry you've had a scary few days and a new heath challenge to encompass. It must feel so good to be home.
TA I too love Snatam Kaur's music, it's so soothing. I often listen to it going to sleep or when I've woken during the night. I found her by accident on YouTube when searching for something else, a lucky find.
Gers, enjoy your weekend at home. As I've got older my wake up time has got earlier too. When I was working I used to wake up just before 6.00am and get up immediately with no trouble. Washed, dressed, breakfast and a bit of housework, and out the door for 8.00am.
Now I wake up any time from 4.30 to 6.00, usually about 5.00, and I'm still in bed at 8.00! My get up and go got up and went... Not helped by burnout which brought forward my retirement. It's very nice not to have to get going early, but the truth is I'm still getting over the burnout, almost two years on. Very grateful to have had savings to tide me over. Only 10 months to state pension age, getting there month by month
. It's a bit of a repeating theme with me, and I'm all for true equality, but the implementation of the increases has hit my cohort twice. Hard if health issues force an early end to working life.
Coffee club this morning, I take my veg waste caddy to a friend's recycling bin (no food waste system in place in my block) and give her a lift to and from coffee. This afternoon I'm going to hap up and go for a walk. I've been cooped up and there's an area nearby I haven't explored.
Keep warm everyone, hugs for all poorlies, carers and anyone troubled and pee'd off. I hope you have the best day possible. xxx0 -
dp1 Congratulations on becoming a granny to what sounds like a gorgeous little girl
My late brother was born during an air raid in 1941 in the east end of London and was the smallest of a pair of twins the bigger one sadly didn't make it, and although Davey was born first, the Dr thought he was too small to survive he weighed 1.lb 14 ozs. The Dr laid him to one side to get the other one out but he sadly had died .
My brother Davey squeaked, and the Dr said 'Good gracious this ones just moved' . He was carefully wrapped in thick flannel and looked after and in those days there were very few ventilators My Mum had him at home, and not even in a hospital but she was determined to keep her little one going he slept in a padded drawer until he was 4 months old He survived bless him and grew into a sturdy little daredevil who would frighten the life of my mum at times as he seemed to have little or no fear.A real fighter whom I sadly lost almost two years ago aged 75. He had such a fighting spirit though and brought so much joy and happiness to everyone who knew him.Always smiling and would do anything to help anyone, thank goodness he squeaked the world would have been a sadder place without him.I wish you well with your new little grandchild.
Well chums life is almost back to normal at last after the Christmas and New Year celebrations The boys go back to school next Monday, and my life has virtually become my own again
Today I will be doing the dropping off and picking up of DGS Jack to his coffee shop job Bless him he has only had two days off since he came home from Uni for the break. But he has been stashing his cash and grafting to ensure he has cash in the bank for the new term Next Wednesday I am taking him back to Uni as he has a philosophy exam on Thursday, but I will go back and pick him up afterwards as he has another 11 days before term starts and he would rather be at home and he is hoping his boss at the coffee shop will give him and another few extra shifts. He is such a hard worker bless him and never turns down a days shift no matter how tired he is
DGS Henry has been revising hard since Christmas as he has the big A level exams this spring and he is hoping for good results He has dome his statement for Uni and will be looking at Uni's in the coming months At the moment its looking like Essex(just outside Colchester ) that he is keen on with perhaps Bournemouth as a second choice ,but we will see.
DGS Mikey is doing his English Lit GCSE in the spring as his school like them to do a couple of exams this year before the main lot next year.
So I shall be on hand with cake, biscuits and juice to smooth furrowed brows for the next few months
Monday my friend is coming down from Dartford for the day, and we shall treat ourselves to a pub lunch out.Its a couple of months since I have seen her as her twin grandchildren started school in September so she had childminding duties.
Tuesday I am hosting the U3A coffee morning so it will be nice to see all my friends after the Christmas break
Wednesday and Thursday I shall be driving to and fro from Hertfordshire with DGS jack and Friday I am back at History club so thats my coming week sorted .So far I think I have about 2 days off to myself where I actually have nothing on the calendar in the next three weeks
:)
Its not all beer and skittles being retired
its quite busy
:)But hopefully the longest month of the year will whizz by and the spring will arrive asap.
Hope everyone is OK and <<hugs >> to those who are having a hard time or are down and poorly
Right the kettle is calling
Take care all
