Reducing study hours / ESA change?

Does changing from full time to part time student status (midway through a course) while claiming IR ESA represent a noteworthy change of circumstance and could this prompt an enforced change over to universal credit?

I know that both full and part time students can receive ESA (subject to meeting the criteria) but know nothing of the implications, if any, of switching status.

Thanks for any information you can offer.

This is not classed as a change of circumstances and will not prompt a move to UC.

Thanks for the reoly Poppy12345. So is there no need to notify the change? Do you have any source for this e.g. official guidance, firsthand experience, case law? If there is a chance of a later "you should have said, and let us decide on its irrelevance" I'd rather have my facts right, supported by evidence - ideally their own information!

There's nothing to show because it's not a change of circumstances, you're just reducing your hours. You can certainly ring DWP and tell them you're reducing your hours but it won't affect your claim.

It will not trigger a need to claim UC but I think it sensible to let DWP know as benefit rules for part time and full time students differ.
Do you have any student loan income, if you do and it has changed you should also let DWP know this.

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

I think that erring on a cautious approach (if in doubt, notify) simplifies matters, at least on the part of the claimant. It means that any error is on individual or systemic problems within the organisation.

Thanks to both of you for responding. Your different perspectives emphasise the complexities and uncertainty inherent to the system.
