Is this right enshrined in law?

I don't think there is any "right" for anyone to be able to claim property they have found. Unless you have the law to quote.

I don't think their is any "right" to keep lost property, even if it has been handed in. Would you give your consent to someone keeping your camera or whatever if you lost it and they had found it?
Or do you think that by someone not going to the police station that you handed something into to see if it was there constitutes consent?

From what I can find so far it seems to be common law since 18th century. And from what I can read on various police force websites it is their policy to return lost property to the finder after six weeks if the original owner can not be found (it's even actively encouraged in their policies as it's even more admin for them if the finder refuses the property as well as not finding the original owner)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Slightly OT here, if you find something and hand it in to Tesco, it will get sent to HO after a few months, the finder is never given it back to keep.
I wonder what happens to these items?A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

But it completely ignores UK common law of lost property (established with the Armory V Delamirie case) and the policies of the police forces (e.g. Kent, Thames Valley, etc they all pretty much follow the same procedures) and the UK Police's own Legal Database http://www.askthe.police.uk/Content/Q245.htm"She is quite the oddball.
