Electricity meter access

We have recently bought some land which we are now living on. Originally, the land formed part of a bigger site which was then divided into three and sold off.

The problem we have is our electric meter is in the neighborurs part of land and he will not allow us access (travelers).

The electric company (Npower) want £9,000 to reposition the meter, which we simply cannot afford.

Can anyone give us guidance on our options?? Npower say we automatically have right to access the meter, but we will simply get shot if we walk onto the land!! Plus, there’s nothing in the deeds such as right of way to allow us to access.

Npower also say they have no record of the meter being installed or the electric supply being put in!!!

Are your electricity bills very high ;)

I would be doing everything I could to make sure I had a meter that I KNEW was only recording my own usage and was on my property and if that involved £9k so be it.

Didn't you realise where the meter was when you bought the land?

Are you actually getting a bill ? or did the original owner before it was split into three.

I may be wrong but it sounds like an illegal connection and nPower's problem. Th problem you will then have is that if nPower take action to remove the supply you will have no supply as well.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

If there are serious threats of violence then you need to contact the police and ask them if they can arrange an escort when the meter reader comes.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

HOW and from whom did you purchase this land? i.e. was it from previous owner who's deeds you'd checked, handled by solicitor/conveyance and for money declared & stamp duty paid?

Think you are being re-sold electricity and you should ask for evidence of what they are being charged to ensure you are not being overcharged.

Tell Npower you think you might have been hooked up to an illegal meter connection and want clarification.

Worst case scenario is that UK Power Networks will disconnect the supply and prosecute whoever they believe made the connection in the first place.

Meanwhile, get some quotes for the supply of suitable cable trunking long enough to go from your dwelling to the main cable out in the road.
If you put in the trunking yourself, this will save you a huge amount of cash when you get a legal connection to the grid.

So it's probably £1k to do the work and £8k to pay for the worker's protection

You say you bought land rather than a dwelling. Who/when was the electricity supply created to your home?
