I've been quietly visiting these forums for some time as I've had trouble with debt for a few years now. After leaving the armed forces some years ago I had serious problems finding permanent, full time work. Being the fool i am i racked up credit card debt, loans and overdrafts.
Eventually I found a stable job and opened a basic account at my bank to try and do some damage control and have managed to clear a lot of the debts I owed. Now I opted to setup online banking and have noticed my current account ' Which had around $600 in overdraft fees still ' has been removed. My question is, as I now feel like I am in a position to pay this debt, which was the smallest of which I owed. Can I re-open this account? I haven't received any letters about it ' i moved home' So I have no idea when it was closed. I feel comfortable with the account i have at the moment but I am trying to fix my credit as best I can. Do you have any advice? I had a horrible experience when I opened my basic account, having to go through 3 appointments as they didn't know the basic accounts existed as an option, and I'd just like some feedback before I go through that ordeal again. Thanks for the help guys.

  • Dollars? Do you mean GBP?

If the account is closed then no it cannot be repopened.

The debt has either been written off or passed to a collection agency and as you didn’t update your address they don’t know where to letters to chase.

    What bank is this with?
  • Sorry that was a typo I did mean pounds. The bank is Halifax, should I go and update my address at my local branch I'm hoping that I can pay this account off, although it would be over the course of two months so I couldn't pay it on the spot. I'm slightly worried that they will freeze or close my basic account I'f I can't pay the amount owed their and then.
  • If it’s closed it’s closed.

You’ll need to ask them what they’ve done with the debt.
