Landlord ignoring reference request - are we doomed?

Hi everyone.
I've been at my current property for over a year now. It's a massive dump and very poorly maintained. I have tried numerous times to contact the landlady about the issues - wall sockets hanging off of the walls, boiler that keeps breaking, leaking bathroom sink (And by leaking I mean it floods the kitchen if used) She never responds. The house is through a letting agency, who also try to contact her about these issues, but she doesn't respond to them either.
The two times I spoke to this lady she was very friendly, and at the time sorted the issues out that we were having, but ever since hasn't spoken to me. I have always paid my rent on time.
Anyway, I found a new house and was told today I had passed tenant referencing, aside from my landlords reference. I have passed the credit check, my employer reference and identity reference. The referencing is with a company called van mildrent (Maybe I've spent it wrong?) I asked them what else we were waiting on and they said it was my current landlord. She hasn't answered any calls. I gave them the email address AND number of the letting agency, although I can't imagine this will be any good if they want a direct reference from the LL.
Is there anywhere we can go from here? I don't see this woman answering her phone any time soon. I have a previous landlord, who still rents a house out with the company that the new house is with, but I'm not sure if he could give me a reference due to me not being his tenant anymore.
I'm very worried that I will miss out on the new house I have secured and be stuck in this current home due to her refusing to give reference.
Any advice?

Have you asked the referencing company if you can use a reference from a previous landlord? Would the letting agency provide a reference confirming you paid the rent on time and didn't trash the place?0 -
I highly doubt that your future LL will drop a potential tenant who has passed all other checks only because the former LL failed to provide reference. I believe you are overthinking it.
Ask the LA what are your options. Old LL reference should be OK as it's mainly used to confirm you are someone who pays rent on time and doesn't trash the place.0 -
Invite the new landlord to come to your current rented property, show them how you keep the place and the maintenance issues.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0
