MECHANICAL Oil heating boiler timer clock upgrade

Hi
Our heating at home is oil fired, it is controlled via a mechanical timer. It is about the size of a light switch with a round dial that has a pin for every 30mins of the day. To get the heating to come on we pull the pins out for each 30mins that we want it on for.

It’s extremely annoying as we need to change it everyday due to my irregular work schedule.

We would like to replace this with an electronic one that allows us to have it set at various times on different days.

This one timer heats the radiators and the water at the same time, can’t have one on without the other. Don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

Ideally we would like to be able to heat just the water and not the radiators but I think that would require an entirely new system. Don’t know?

Does anyone know of a timer that can replace the current one? DIY/Plug&Play would be best. Something that also has a smart function also would be good but not essential.

I really don’t know anything about this sort of stuff so any help at all would be great. Thanks.

is the timer part of the boiler or mounted on the wall ?

if its wall mounted it is easy enough, you would just need to identify the cables (mains feed) (boiler feed) and the controls that control hot water, radiator heating, (room stat's, tank stat, MOS, ) you would need that to run the system efficiently,

but you could just replace the timer you have and not wire it up with all the extras, just set it up to come on/off a couple of times a day then use the "advance" button to run it if you want it on earlier
  • It is wall mounted.

We have no room stats in the house. There is one stat on the boiler just.

The timer on the wall, in the house, simply just turns the boiler on and off.

Any advice on a particular model?

have you TRV valves on the radiators ?
without a tankstat, MOS on the heating, your only control is the boiler stat which is very inefficient,
I have the earlier version of this "Drayton LP522 5/2 Day Programmer " but I have tankstat, MOS's on heating system,
maybe worth you looking at wireless tankstat & wireless room thermostat that can link to a programmer
read up about wireless controls and then check prices on JTM plumbing website

going wireless would save a lot of work running cables to the hot water tank and room stat
