Jewellers have lost my engagement ring...

Hi 1st post on MSE although I've been a distant observer for some time and gained a wealth of knowledge form it!

However I'm now after a little more specific advice. I put 3 rings into Ernest Jones to be cleaned two weeks ago, of which two were returned and one was misplaced!

Since then the customer service has been abysmal. I've had to prompt each conversation with the store, during which they have been very nice and accomodating, but a week later I still am no closer to locating my ring or being offered any form of compensation.

The store manager has said they will replace the ring, however this is apparently being dealt with by Customer Services at head office...

I wondered if anyone could advise how I can get an up to date valuation for my ring. It was a white gold solitaire purchased in 2001 for £850.

Also, in light of the sentimental value associated with it, what level of compensation would you recommend I ask for? I'm devastated that they have lost my engagement ring, but at the same time I want to make sure I'm fairly recompensed.

Any advice would be very much appreciated,

Many thanks

  • doubt you'll get much for sentamental value. Do you have the original receipt and any photos? If so go to another couple of independant jewelers and get quotes for a replacement.
  • Thanks for the advice Blacksheep - I hadnt thought of that. I still have the original receipt plus a Jewellery identification report that came with the ring so I'll hit the town tomorrow and see what I can find out.

  • Also bear in mind that you will be looking for a ring of the same quality eg clarity & ct weight and not the same value as the high street jewellers tend mark the price of rings quite high and also ask for an independent valuation.

  • Will do. Fortunately I have that information so I'll see what I can find out.

    Thanks again.

Compensation in court is to put you back to your start position so a ring and any out of pocket expenses

Sadly officially you'll get nothing for sentimental value, you should make a claim for a bit extra for this reason but when an offer is made bear in mind that by law a court isnt likely to increase a sentimental value payment or even grant one so if your offered ring value or a like for like ring along with a payment for the sentimental issues your probably best accepting
