right-click the menus on the top left and select customize. A box opens with extra icons you can use
You can then drag things anywhere you want and add/remove icons till you're happy
To save space:
I always drag the address bar, go button, and search box to the top line,
Drag the 'Bookmarks toolbar Items' to the second line0 -

That was Firefox only
With IE you right-click the the area where the home icon is.
You can then add/remove buttons by selecting customize
You can also untick 'lock the toolbars' Then you can move things about by dragging the dotted lines that then appear on the left of all the bars (if you know what I mean
