I hope it's not too late for carrots Euronorris, this morning I sowed a row of early nantes carrots to be covered by cloches later, and some cascade chantanny type in a cold frame, wait and see what happens.

We received the programme for the veg show in 3 weeks time. We don't grow veg or flowers to show, we just show what we grow, if that makes sense.

I have an apple tree in the garden- Braemar - and apples are covered in black spots! Any idea what causes it, and do I need to discard them all? Conference pears are all OK

someone else may know what's wrong but I'm rubbish with fruit.

It's surprising how jobs mount up. I hadn't done much over the last few days as life got in the way. Today I couldn't believe how much needed doing.
I picked the last of a row of carrots as I needed the space
I up rooted some mangetout - surprising how many I missed as quite a number had formed peas - they won't go to waste
The rummer beans, that took 10mins to pick them,
Courgettes - need I say more.
Evicted the sweetcorn from the tunnel as it had finished. I need the space for winter things

Then the toms needed attention and tying in, planted out 3 courgettes undercover, the sweet potatoes are taking over and needed tidying - so are the squash.
I too sowed some carrots, its not too late euronorris and mnd They should be ready End October into November and may last over the winter but we do live in a warm part of the country (no snow here for the last 3yrs)
Tidied up a couple of empty beds ready for the second lot of sweetcorn. I've never grown a late crop of sweetcorn before but I thought I'd give it a go as it's a favourite veg here.

Still more jobs to be done especially strimming the paths before it looks like a jungle. That's a tomorrow job.

But I now ache. I stupidly thought retirement was for sitting on the patio, reading the Sunday Papers and enjoying a glass of something - how wrong I was

I'm loving hearing all your stories about your crops and basic day to day running of your plots :)

I dropped off the signed tenancy agreements yesterday for our plot, so hopefully we should have the keys before the end of the week, fingers crossed.

I had a little look in Wilko yesterday and *nearly* bought some later planting seeds, which said plant Jun/Jul... but I wasn't sure if it was too late and also reeled myself in because we have far too much to do before planting things :rotfl:

Have a great day everyone :)

I'm no expert either but here's what The RHS say:

    https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=81

Note the bit about the fruit being (probably) fine

I vaguely remember getting something like this one year, it was just superficial ie not penetrating the skin, so the spots came off with the help of a fingernail - that will likely bruise the fruit, so maybe a light wash & dry when you come to harvest..?

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

I tend to give it a couple of weeks on the assumption that it's not an exact science, annual weather variations, and the exact location of this mythical plot where June/July is the ideal time for sowing (it's almost certainly going to be much further south than me though)

Given that I'm stuck indoors again, I decided to go looking for the definitive answer. Google was relatively pointless, though it did throw up this broad seasonal calendar from Real Seeds which looks quite useful:

After that I just decided to use my RHS membership and ask them - (answer within 10 working days)

    Don't go AWOL.

Just had a look at your link to Real Seeds. Two hours later and three packets of seeds ordered I must go and do what I had planned for this pm. :)
