What tradesman do I need to fill in a hole in a wall?

Hello,

My new year project is to decorate my living room. This starts today with the removal of the old wallpaper.

I have a large hole in the wall where I think a fire used to be. it's about 40cm x 60cm but the edges are not straight. It looks like someone bashed through the plasterboard and then never bothered finishing the job. There was a thin piece of wood glued to the wall covering the hole, which I have removed.

I need to fill the hole. As it's on the main wall it needs to be done well, otherwise it will be obvious and look a mess. I don't think I could do a good DIY job so what kind of tradesman do I need? It seems like a very small job to call in a builder to do.

I am expecting to have to get a plasterer to skim the walls once the paper's off so I'd like to get the hole filled before then so it can be skimmed at the same time.

Thanks!

  • If your getting a plasterer in to skim it afterwards then it sounds like a perfect diy job to me.

Otherwise any handyman type person could do it.
  • Plasterer might do it as on refurbishments they tend to end up having to do some making good before they can put the plaster on - worth talking to them, anyway.

Just off your thread title, I thought cash machine operative.

Have you considered making a time capsule & tucking it into the space? A jamjar is usually considered air & watertight, but you might want to encase it in something that can withstand demolition. A child's shoe used to be put into walls (AngloSaxon times & anyway sourcing a single shoe is tricky).

    All the best!

    I hadn't - but it's an interesting idea.
