Small windfall don't want it messing up my benefits

I was very kindly given £3000 by a relative for Christmas.

I am on legacy benefits currently due to ill health/disability and have been advised to stay on legacy benefits as long as possible.

While the money is very welcome, I'm very nervous of the potential effects on benefits.

Can anyone advise?

So long as your total capital is below £6k your benefits won't be effected. Above £16k you won't be eligible and between £6k & 16k they deduct £1 for every £250.

    That's one nice xmas present!
  • In a way I am disappointed that you have been given £3,000, which would not affect your benefits at all.

I was looking forward to seeing the responses to your question when I thought that you had been given money over £12,000

The initial reply from JonVarnas explained what effect the increased capital could have on your benefit. I do think the wording of the topic title is not great as it suggests that you are looking for ways to avoid benefit being affected. In fairness there is nothing in the body of the message to suggest that is the case.
Even assuming you were just under the £6k figure before receiving this money, it would only reduce benefit by £12 per week.
