Barclays 'Anti-Gambling' marketing ploy... lies!

Options
Barclays are being praised for offering a service that doesn't work so don't be fooled by it. I put it to the test today. After signing into the Barclays app i then needed to go on to live chat as there was no shortcut to block gambling. I was then informed that it wasn't possible to block gambling by the app (it may well be in the future though) but they would do it via live chat with 'immediate effect'. So.... six hours later i put it to the test and decided to deposit on one of the biggest gambling sites..Ladrokes and made a deposit of £50. YES...it went through without problem! I then checked this out again via the app live chat who said 'yes, your card has been blocked'. Big companies lying and getting praise makes my blood boil. You can't screenshot the live chat but i have however taken photos of the conversation if anybody would like to take this further. I for one will be changing banks!

It is a bit useless anyway, if someone has the intent to gamble they will find a way. I can think of several ways to get around the self imposed block by using your card to purchase/fund X and then using X to deposit on a gambling site.

I don't have a problem, fortunately i was just bored enough to try it out as i've banked with them for 33 years but i do want others to be aware. It's false advertising that is being enforced by big names i respect...Martin being one.

So you thought it would be fun to make your bank think you've got a gambling problem by trying to block gambling transactions on your account?

You must have been really bored!

  • It might now backfire on him - I suspect they will have written notes on his account file saying what he said so next time he wants an overdraft loan or credit card - he might be stuffed - as they think he has a gambling problem!

The ability to block Gambling transactions is currently live. You can find it in the Merchant Control subsection of Cards.

I second the motion that OP has far too much time on her hands, and good luck to whichever bank she inflicts herself on next.

If you don't gamble, why would you even think about testing it ? Pretty silly idea really. There is now a record of a conversation about possible gambling, plus a deposit to a gambling website after the OP asked to block their account !!!!!
