google play services stopped

This morning I switched on my mobile phone, samsung galaxy mini S4 and two messages keep coming up that I have never seen before.

1.Unfortunately Google Play services stopped
2.Unfortunately the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped

Looking online one possible solution is:
Go to Settings > Apps.
Scroll to All apps and then scroll down to “Google Play Services” app.
Open the app details and tap on the “Force stop” button.
Then, tap on the “Clear cache” button.

When I go to Googple Play services Force stop button and Uninstall updates is greyed out. The only option is Disable. I have cleared the cache but it hasn't solved the problem.

What else can I try to solve the problem as some apps won't work with this message.

I have not made any changes on the phone nor I haven't done any updated ot installed new soft ware for a very long time so I don't know why I have suddenly got this problem. I lasted used one on the non working apps 2 days ago and everything was OK.

Tap on 'Storage' within the Google Play Services app and you can clear storage & cache. Doing similar if you still have issues with the Google Play Store app itself won't hurt.

Time/Date/Location all correct?

Had the same thing on an old tablet that had not been used for a while, the time and date had reset due to the battery dropping below minimum voltage.

Colin_Maybe - Clearing cache in Google Play Services and Google Play store has not effect. The is no button to claear data in Google Play Service app, the only option is to manage storage which when I touch this it takes me back to my list of apps.

forgotmyname - Time/Date are Ok. I only switch on location when I am using an app which needs the GPS.

Has my phone died and is only good for the scrap heap or is there any hope?

Does the date/time match your routers date/time?

Factory reset maybe needed.
