Tesco Foundation Credit Card. First Credit Card?

Hi,

I am turning 18 very soon and want to start building my credit file as soon as possible, ready for any future events. I have a steady income and plan to get a credit card to buy day-to-day things that I would usually buy and then just pay the card in full each month. I will also be getting a SIM only deal as this is currently cheaper than my PAYG sim.

We tend to do a lot of shopping in Tesco for household food and things. Therefore I was looking at maybe getting the Tesco Foundation Credit Card, for the extra Clubcard Points, which is advertised towards people with a poor credit history or those who want to re-build.
Does anyone know if this card would also be suitable for someone who is new to credit? Or would it be better going to Barclays who I've banked with for a while for their Initial Credit Card?

Looking forward to your replies.
Thanks ;)

As Gary points out use an eligibility checker but some people suggest, on here, to try your bank first as they have a better idea of how you conduct your account with them.

With the Tesco Foundation Card you can still use it as a Clubcard without making purchases on it, if you so wish.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

Tesco can be funny, I would go for capital one first
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Have a look at the Aquacard, which gives 0.5% cashback (up to £100 per annum), more than the Tesco Clubcard returns.

You can set up a direct debit to pay off the full monthly balance each month as you intend.

But aquacard doesn't offer £45 cash back on Quidco.
  • I echo that Tesco can be picky / odd with who they accept
