Flights - Personal Item - How far have you stretched it and got away with it?

From the on board announcements the general rule is the personal item must fit beneath the seat in front and not stored in an overhead locker.0

I recently flew with just a handbag in the cabin but because my seat was next to an exit, the bag had to go in the overhead locker to keep the area clear.0 -
It’s average hand bag size, nothing bigger.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

It can be as big as you like as long as you're comfortable with it taking the room your feet should be taking.
Most people extract the urine with their main carry on bag anyway.0 -
I disagree. If several people say they taken a 25 litre rucksack then they have been "that guy" but that doesn't mean you should join their ranks. The under seat recommendations above are much more reasonable.I'm attempting to not be 'that guy', by finding out what people have had issues with. Clearly I'm allowed a personal item, I have a few different rucksacks that range in sizes.
Obviously, because it's ambiguously defined, different gate agents will of course can handle it differently, however if several people say 'I have used a 25 litre rucksack without issue' or 'I have used an M&S Jute bag'. then that'd give me confidence that I'm not going to be 'that guy.'0 -
I take a Herschel Packable daypack (Backpack). Its what i consider a small backpack and is squishy but holds a surprising amount.0
