Redundancy after 28 years

Hi all. After 28 years, my last shift will be tomorrow after being made redundant. Feeling little emotional and rather daunting at the moment.
How do you deal with this situation?

It happens, and it takes time to come to accept the new situation.
You couldn't do anything, it wasn't your fault .... you will manage somehow, although not a nice start to 2019 I agree.

The main thing is not to get too stressed - from experience, that doesn't help. Make yourself a new budget of essential and non essential stuff. If you have a partner working, that helps too.

I got 'laid off' medically a couple of years ago and we 'manage' ok. Just not much excess money that we used to enjoy at one time.
  • Thank you for the sound advice.

Make sure you sign on, you are entitled. Take advantage of any offers of help/assistance that come your way but don't get too stressed out if you feel cast adrift.

    Be kind to yourself.
  • Been redundant twice now. Took a while to sink in first time until I realised it wasn't down to me and nothing I could do or had done. Turned out I went on to better things. Few jobs after got made redundant again. Decided its fates way....gain went on to better things.

    Good luck!

Depending on your financial situation, give yourself a bit of a break, take stock, then see it as a way of pursuing new opportunities. Now you've been forced to make a move from your comfort zone and job security if the next job isn't right for you then there's less to keep you in it so it's easier to move on again.

I took a month off with no job hunting to do what I wanted and to catch up with things I'd been wanting to do. My voluntary work got me the foot in the door for my next job which was a step out of management.
It's a shock. And it's not nice to go through. But it doesn't have to be a bad thing in the longer term.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Thank you all for your advice. It means so much to me and I really appreciate it.
  • Sorry to hear the news

Silver lining I was made redundant after 28 years

I was thinking at the time I will struggle to get another job etc etc

In the last 2 years have had 3 jobs , left first two because I was not enjoying as still same type of job from which I was made redundant from ( IT)

Now retraining as a care worker and love it

Best of luck , try not to stress as life is too short

All the best for the future
  • I work in IT.

Got made redundant in apr 2008 due to credit crunch, did private work for 1 mth then found a an IT job in Canary Wharf. Worked there for 7 months, did not enjoy it and left end 2008 to start a new job in 2009. Worked with co until march 2014 when owners decided to close co, made redundant and walked straight into another job working directly for the client.

Now starting in 2019 looking to move elsewhere, but nearly 50 and that is too old in IT.

I was made redundant 3 times, work in IT. 1st in 2004 age 54, found a contract then permanent in 2005

Made redundant in 2012 found another permanent job age 62, again in it . then went back to co that made me redundant in 2012 3 years ago. Just taken VR and retired aged 68 after 51 years working.

So being made redundant is not the end of the world!
