Don't need car but don't want to sell either

I am moving to London so won't be needing my car anymore. However, if things don't work out and I move back I will need it again so don't want to sell it yet.
1) I plan to leave it at my parents house and my father who is a named driver will occasionally drive it (he has his own car) to stop the battery going flat etc.
I will tell the insurer that my address has changed and it will be parked here but do I also need to tell them that I won't be here most of the time?
If it is just sitting in the drive then do they care?
2) I don't want to sell but could I maybe rent it out for say 6 months to a friend who needs a car? I wouldn't want much and it would be good if someone was driving it regularly - what are the practicalities of this?
I presume then they would pay their own insurance/road tax/fuel etc.
In which case I would cancel my insurance - would there be any impact of me not holding insurance for a few years? I currently have 4Y NCB so I would lose that but not sure it makes a big difference.

Your NCB will "live" for two years between policies.
Unless it's something special or you're very attached to it, just sell it and buy something else in the future if you need to.0 -
If the rented car has a fault which causes an accident, you could be liable and would be uninsured.0

What happens if you want to move back before the rental is over?
Unless it's a special car or you'll lose a fortune on it you're better just selling it now and buying another one later if you need it. Otherwise you'll be paying tax, insurance, MOT, servicing, maintenance and depreciation, as well as your dad needing to find somewhere to store it.0 -
Sell it. You will be paying out £100s a year just to insure, MOT, tax and service (yes it still needs servicing even if it doesn't go far) car you don't need. The car is only going to drop in value and I doubt very much that it is a car which cannot be found for sale in their thousands. If it only gets used for a short run once in a blue moon to keep the battery charged it is going to go downhill mechanically very fast. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Sell it. Think positive and move on with your life."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

What sort of car is it? If it's nothing special I would just SORN it on the drive for six months and then sell it if it looked like you were staying in London. Cars can easily sit for six months, although best to disconnect the battery and be prepared to buy a new one unless you're going to leave it on a conditioner.0
