Laser ? pens

Options
I recently bought one of these (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07D3KCXLW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) from Amazon to play with our cats.
They run on a single AA battery

Whilst they cannot be LASERS at less than £1.50 - how do they work ?
The beam is incredibly concentrated and "looks" like a laser
It "fires" its beam - several hundred yards in to the night sky - without dissipating !

A laser pen to play with cats (and passing aircraft). Beggars belief!

Thats astonishing - I expected to be told "They are just "concentrated" LED light or similar
But - they are really ruby lasers - at less than £1.50 - wow - hasn't technology dropped in price ?

I have highlighted a word in the Amazon description of the item:
Teabelle 2-in-1 Pet Cat Kitten Toy Red Light Flashlight Pen Pointer Toy LED Light"

Does this give you a clue about how it operates?

Do you really think it would be a bright idea [ho-ho!] to shine a real laser pointer into an animal's eyes?

You can buy semiconductor lasers for under a tenner but not for £1.50!
