Unless you have a specific reason to use Samsung smartphone, you should avoid both in 2018, As the smartphone performance improves a lot, so let's focus upon other issue such as screen resolution, software update etc.

Display Screen resolution (ppi) At 2018, we can get 400 ppi screen at budget price.

    Samsung Galaxy J6 293ppi
    Samsung Galaxy J4 267ppi
(Xiaomi Mi A2 lite 432 ppi)

Just using one spec as a comparasion is always doomed to failure.
The Samsung build quality is better.
The Camera is better, especially for selfies. Maybe not so much for video stability.

There is no NFC in the Xiaomi, so using the phone for payments etc is out of the question.
The Xiaomi will, no doubt, get more updates than the Samsung as it's almost pure Android.
Battery life is about the same on both, even though Xiomi has a bigger one.

It's always going to be a game getting the choice made, at any level, but, more, so at the budget end.

I am promoting the importance on screen resolution for Smartphones at 2018/2019, as nobody mentioned about this.

Interestingly everybody mentioned about the brand, processor and price (of course), but nobody mentioned about display resolution.... Then OEMs are clever enough to cut the cost with cheaper lower screen to make extra money from you.

It is understandable we feel as if we have no choice but Samsung and Apple in the UK market (both have 40 % market share in the UK). It would be great if Samsung /Apple offers a better screen for budget smartphones. But this is not the case (yet) .

I have found these phones commented at MSE forum

    Samsung Galaxy J6 720 x 1480 pixels 293 ppi density
    Motorola Moto G6 Play 720 x 1480 pixels 282 ppi density
    Samsung Galaxy A6 (2018) 720 x 1480 pixels 294 ppi density
    Samsung Galaxy J4 267ppi
    (Sony Xperia L1 267 ppi)

I have repaired my friend's Sony Xperia L1 recently, I immediately have realised the screen was so blur and not very comfortable with text reading. I have found out this is due to lower screen resolution. I was so curious about the budget smartphone screen specification, it turned out that the majority of the Western Brand still sell at 720 pixel (or even lower) at the budget ranges. 720 pixel was decent standard at 2014, Now it is the time to demand 1080 pixel especially the screen size is getting bigger.

Well, it doesn't matter how much you pay, as higher ppi (1080 pixel) produces finer and crisp reproduction of texts as well. People often talk about video streaming only but higher ppi helps to read small crisp texts (web news etc). So this is nothing to do with high end or low end spec actually. So I strongly suggest non enthusiasts should seriously consider a better higher resolution. (at least 400 ppi)

In short, anybody who watch the smartphone screen (i.e.everybody) should take care of their eyes. Higher ppi is "elderly eyes friendly" as well. Your mum and dad may not need very powerful processor, but they would need a better higher resolution screen particularly. (less tiring with watching screen)

At 2018, everybody can take advantage of 1080 pixel /400ppi at budget price, I suggest that everybody includes the screen resolution spec when considering smartphone.

Please including the screen resolution specification, (Get 400ppi at least at 2019) in addition to the brand, Processor, memory, Storage, Camera spec, NFC, Bluetooth, Wifi, Battery Size, Headphone jack etc etc. As the most of the time, you actually watch your Smartphone Screen.

Wouldn't it be good if we had a MSE forum especially for things like televisions and phones?

Perhaps we could get a sub-forum dedicated to mobile telephones. ;)
