Is it good value to redeem Amex reward points when checking out online?

When I use my Amex Rewards Credit Card to pay for items online I frequently get told that I am eligible to redeem reward points at the time of purchase. Does anyone know if this offers a better rate of return than redeeming points on Amazon vouchers for example?

Amazon vouchers give 0.5p per point so work out if its the same, better or worse. As a rule of thumb you should get 1p per mile using them for airmile and hotels etc

I don't actually know what the rate of return is for redeeming points at checkout - that was why I asked the question. Does anyone know what it is?

What site? I'm assuming it will tell you how much money you get back compared to how many points you spend so you can work it out...?

The last site was the DVLA road tax site IIRC. You need to click the "Redeem now" button to get any further, and since I don't want to commit to spending the points before I know what they'll be worth I've never clicked it so far...

You can redeem MR points for 0.45 a point.

Air miles are worth much more if you collect enough and use them wisely.

If you are thinking of redeeming points for shopping, you might not be a travelling person so air miles might not be useful for you.
I usually wait for Sainsburys double point promotions and transfer points to Nectar. I could then use them at double normal value in Sainsburys (roughly 1p per point).

Thanks for that. At 0.45 a point I'm better off with Amazon vouchers @0.5p a point.
Thanks for the tips re. Airmiles and Nectar. Pardon my ignorance, but are Airmiles restricted to use with BA and its partners?

If you are not collecting hotel points or air miles, you probably have the wrong card. A cashback or Nectar Amex might suit you better

No, you can also get Virgin etc take a look on the amex website. It's worth it if you can get your head around the miles etc and book in advance. Failing that hotel points are always good redemption
