Shower backing up

Options
My house has a downstairs toilet and shower room, it was installed before I bought the house. Sometimes when flushing the toilet the waste is forced through the shower tray hole. I have tried using a plunger which removes the waste water in the shower tray but I don't want to be doing that each time the toilet is used.

How can I find a permanent solution to this problem?

Use a proper drain cleaning product in your shower drain regularly. Long hair, body fat, body hair and conditioner quickly cause partial blockages and black slime grows on it.

Don't flush anything inappropriate down your toilet. Poop and toilet paper only, wet wipes are bad apparently.

If that fails have a plubmer to look at the arrangements under the shower tray/ behind the toilet.

When you say 'waste' is being forced through the shower tray hole, do you mean the brown stuff? If so then it sounds like the shower waste pipe is connected into the toilet waste, if it's a very short distance between the two and there's not much of a drop on the shower waste, the pressure from the flush is probably forcing waste back up the shower waste pipe and into the tray.

I saw this on a house I once lived in.

Unless I'm mistaken, this doesn't sound like a blockage in the shower waste. Could be caused by a partial blockage in the toilet waste. Very hard to say without dismantling the plumbing and inspecting everything to see where the issue actually lies.

Unless you are very good at plumbing this is a job for a professional I think. If you are good with plumbing then I'd start by getting access to the pipework underneath the shower to see what is going on. If there are any blockages then clear them. If it's a case of the shower being too close to the toilet waste then you may be looking at a re-engineering job on the plumbing to stop the water coming back up the wrong way.

The waste from the toilet is finding it easier to go to the shower than down the drain. This could be a routing problem or a blockage problem, it's hard to tell from here.
