Searches on credit report not me

Options
I checked my Noddle report and I have 3 searches that aren't for me appear in my report.

My name (for example) is Jennifer Anne Smith, maiden name Brown.

The reports are against Anne Brown, which is my mums name but different date of birth (younger than me). The address is against an old address, somewhere I lived 7 or 8 years ago and have no association with any more. As far as I know the house is empty and being renovated so no one is living there.

I don't know if these soft searches have resulted in a new card in this name being issued to the old address. I can't see any new credit accounts but Noddle reports can take a while to update with that sort of thing.

Does anyone know if I should be reporting these searches and if so who do I report it to?

  • Are there any hard searches?

If not then a soft search has no impact.

You could contact the lender that made the searches and ask

Hi I'm currently in a similar situation. From my understanding and experience noddle is the worst. U need to email the information commissioner and noddle/call credit ceo and also your local mp to get it sorted. I know I'm being over the top here but trust me what seems like a few soft searches now could get more complex as time passes. Read my thread. These credit reference agencies have cost me a job. Get any links to any financial associates removed and also addresses if you have any you dont recognise. Financial institutions are the worst inlcuding credit reference agencies for messing up data and linking information. Hope that helps.

Two are marked as "quotation search" and one is marked as "application for credit".

All three searches are from credit card companies; Newday, capital one and Barclaycard.

Didn't you have a thread about post going missing? Could someone be using information from your letters to steal your identity?
  • Have you done any eligibility checks recently?

There’s no need to email a ceo or MP to get them removed - just raise a query with them directly or with TransUnion

This is the second post I've seen the day where parents giving their children similar names has resulted in something going wrong with credit reports.

From a completely different house. The address that the check has been done on was my childhood home, I've moved three times since then and my family sold up and left the area over a year ago so the current owners aren't related to me.

No, nothing at all. I've closed a few accounts recently because I was finally offered a credit card with good rates. I do have a Barclaycard but I've binned the aqua and capital one and have no intention of getting another.

My name isn't that similar to my mums and the date of birth for this search makes the person 9 years younger than me. I have my mums name as a middle name but that's fairly common and I have a totally different first name and surname since I got married. All of my accounts are in my married name and I've never used my middle name instead of my first name for anything as it's an old fashioned name that I don't like.

Noddle have emailed me back advising that they have a team of specialists looking into the searches and will update me when they have information.

They've recommended that I register with CIFAS, if I do this will it make genuine applications for credit a real pain in the backside?

They've also said they can put a notice on my file with a password that will alert anyone doing a search to the potential that the search is fraudulent and to phone me to ask for the password. This sounds like a good idea, they've sent me a draft of the notice they'll put on the file and asked me to just email back a password.

I'm quite glad it's being attended to so quickly. I just need to decide on a password and wether or not to register with CIFAS and it looks like Noddle will do the rest.

    Bumping this for further advice.

I've heard back from Call Credit and two of the credit card companies are removing the searches from the file. The third company (capital one) are refusing to remove the search.

I have emailed capital one directly, told them what was going on and asked them to help me resolve the problem but that was a month ago and they've not replied.

I've emailed again last week to ask why they've not removed the search when the other companies did and reiterated that the searches were not in my name, not my date of birth and not my address. They're still ignoring me.

I tried to call but the customer service agent said that the decision is final.

Can I complain to the financial ombudsman on this basis or do I need it in writing from Cap One that they've made a final decision?
  • Ideally you need a deadlock letter from capital one.

But open a case anyways with the FOS
