It’s much easier here, virtually all fruit and veg is loose, bread is loose, mest and fish is almost only sold at deli counters which enables you to take your own containers.

Bars of soap generally have a sticker on, or a paper sleeve.

Well finally managed to get some none plastic wrapped / more sustainable toilet roll ordered, should be delivered today, but probably won't get it till the weekend as I've had to get it ordered to someone else's house. I also like that they give money to build toilets where needed.

The good thing is that as more things run out in the house and are replaced with lower waste products, the household waste should go down.

We're trying, but it is a gradual process for us.

We have some tiered recycling boxes in the kitchen (which I have labelled), to enable us to sort and recycle more easily. So we recycle as much as possible. We also sell on, gift, or charity shop things we no longer need as much as possible, and buy second hand where we can.

For Christmas I requested a shampoo bar to help me reduce plastic there. Hubby has made the switch to a shampoo bar also, and loves it. Currently using up stash of shower gels and will then switch to bars also.

I have tried a conditioner bar......I've really tried to get on with it, used it for over a month....but, it's really difficult to use, doesn't condition my hair as well, leaves it with a film and feels greasy, little bits of it keep breaking off and then sticking to the bath. I've given up on that one. Any alternative suggestions?

:) When I wore long hair, I conditioned it by putting half a mug of vinegar in the last basin of rinse water. Worked very well, but I don't have any answers for those who wash their hair under the shower, unforunately.

  • I used to do the same before I had a shower put in. Could use up plastic water bottles by filling them with vinegar and the squirting them at the hair?
    Looking ahead
  • Vinegar never worked very well for my hair (did use it if it was a crisis of no conditioner and I had no other choice)
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

Hahahaha, that made me laugh! But I do remember seeing a magazine as a teenager recommending some home made solutions, and one of them included beaten egg!

Maybe the solution is for me to try and make my own? Worth looking into!

  • I suppose it depends on how dry your hair is in the first place, but I used to heat a little olive oil in the microwave, and massage that into my hair and leave it for a while before I washed it.

I appreciate that this may not be very practical though if you are trying to get ready and out of the house first thing in the morning, but it worked for me.

Yeah, not terribly practical for me sadly. I think I'm going to give home made solutions a go though.

Sadly my hair does get very dry, and it's quite long. I can't get a brush through it if I don't use conditioner.
