Well done Dollypeeps, that is brill! Do all Tesco’s do the recycling of old plastic bags....

Big Tesc0 and Sains round here have the containers for recycling old bags, and the C00p were talking about it on the local radio last week. I don't know if this is only East of England C00p, but they accept bread bags as well as carrier bags (I thought, just as well, as I've been sending bread bags back to the supermarkets for sometime now...!) and will change a worn bag for life from any shop , not just their own bags.

M0rrisons near us used to recycle bags but don't any more. When I asked at the time, Customer services couldn't tell me why it wasn't an option any more.

I was in Liddly this afto and found myself reaching for passata in tetrapak type cartons, then stopped and looked at passata in tins. Same price (the tins had a longer BB date) and steel is a lot easier to recycling. Yup, slightly more awkward to store and slightly heavier to transport on my pushbike, but I went with the cans. ...

I had a similar realisation regarding multi packs of cans - I'd automatically picked up the supermarket's own 4 pack of chopped tinned tomatoes, then looked at the plastic wrap round them and looked to see what else was available. Nap0lina 6 pack in a cardboard sleeve was on offer so the price was close enough. Irritatingly, 4 pack tetrapacks are usually in a card sleeve, it's the cans that come in plastic!
  • I have done the same with pasatta and also with tomato puree...stopped buying tetrapak and tubes and now buy the glass jars. Only thing is the pasatta one is so big I have to lay it down in the fridge....lol

When I was a lot younger our local supermarket was Safeway where they offered large strong brown bags for carrying all our shopping. Free of charge. Once it was taken over, inevitably, the paper bags disappeared.

I look forward to seeing the same type of bag being brought back.

Last week I had a bag for life replaced as it was all holey, turned out that I'd had it for over two years so I feel better about it.

Safeway used to do large green crates for your shopping too, think we still have some.
  • I too buy passatta in glass jars: the remainder goes in the fridge for a few days and what doesn't get used up then I freeze, so none is wasted.
Atypicalblonde: you mentioned that you buy cans of dog food in a cardboard box, can you please tell me where you get it? Thanks.
  • Nonnadiluca. Yesterday I bought 12 cans of Butcher's canned dog food in a cardboard box from Tesco for £7. I hope that helps
  • Thanks for that x

Do you find the passatta freezes ok? The jar I have says not suitable for home freezing.

  • I've not had a problem with freezing passatta, it hadn't occurred to me not to, ( the advantage of not reading the label! ) We're still alive so far ☺

We also regularly freeze passatta. Sometime the little extra left over is the perfect amount for a homemade pizza.
  • Probably more to do with the change in the consistency maybe, rather than it actually nor being good for you. I'll give it a go. What do you freeze it in?
