Thanks for your reply. I hate the term "goodwill gesture" when I believe I am in the right. It's like a red rag to a bull. I am one of those people who are very principled and my husband would agree with you that we had the steam mop replaced so that should have been an end to it but as I told him, I would have gladly given up the steam mop replacement and gone down the repair route if it meant not letting the store get away with in my opinion, fobbing me off, but the worst part of it was how they spoke to me. Not as a customer, but as a naughty child and I just don't want them to be allowed to get away with that. I'm pretty stubborn that way
You sound like a delightful customer. Sometimes it's better to work with a retailer, employ a little charm and persuade them to effect a solution that you want rather than adopting the outraged-amateur-lawyer stance. You may be in the right but your attitude is wrong.

It may often be quicker and easier to go direct to the manufacturer, but with smaller items they will often suggest you send the faulty item back.

This involves expense, hassle of packaging and the risk of loss. So personally with an item like this I’d insist that the seller handled the guarantee claim.

Actually I am one of the nicest people in the world. I've been called "Too nice for my own good" on many occasions but I do have my limits just like anyone. I am not proud that I let my anguish this one time get the better of me and I did try charm and deplomacy initially but my rights were being violated. How many times must I be polite when being ignored?? You obviously must be a saint with no faults or flaws at all unless being judgemental is considered a fault?

This doesn't tally with your account though. You were first referred to the manufacturer, you then asserted your rights backed by a Which? article, upon which Argos relented and gave you a replacement. At what point were you ignored? At what point were your rights violated? You had to ask twice. Big deal.

    You said yourself:

This angered me even though I was getting the replacement and I demenaded to know how a comapany doing the minimum they were required to do by law was in any way a goodwill getssure.
Why did you get angry and demanding after you were given what you wanted? What was the point?

They might get a bit “umpty” when they get ganged up on.

The point is I shouldn't have to demand and keep on insisting to get my rights. Why couldn't they just offer me either a replacement or a repair with no fuss? It's the bully boy tactics I object to. Imagine going into ER bleeding and then being berrated for having the gaul to turn up unannounced and ask for treatment. Then being told that I would be treated this one and only time, but not to dare try it on a second time?? Yes I know I am exagerating here but that is how I felt. Either I am entitled to something or I am not. It's that simple and if I am entitled then give it to me. If not then don't but there is no need to speak to me as though I am a naughty child trying it on when I am in the right. My rights were violated the moment they insisted I was wrong even though I had evidence to prove otherwise. I wouldn't have minded if the staff had bothered to do some research to see if what I was saying was in fact correct.
I was ignored when I wanted an explanation as to how what they were offering me was a goodwill gesture. Maybe I should have used the term staff were unwilling or unable to answer my question rather than ignored, but to me, it amounted to the same thing.

Thank you Zandori. I don't really understand what spam means but I am honestly a nice person who has often gotten taken advantage of and the one time I stick up for my rights and maybe admittedly get more worked up than I would normally in store, I get lots of personal attacks on here which has nothing to do with consumer law.
I appreciate your kind words of support and to all the other posters on here I appologise if I have somehow offended any of you. I am a bit naive when it comes to online activity and I often forget about the trolls out there who spoil it for the genuine posters who honesty want to help

Aww thanks for the support Robatwork but I think I'll probably leave when I've read and responded to all answers, just in case someone comes up with a really helpful answer. I'm not sure this forum is what I was looking for when I found it but I do appreciate you trying to make me feel welcome :)
