Excessive/£300 a month gas bills- help please!!
First post on here but really hoping someone can help.
We moved into a new property in July and quite simply we are experiencing astronomical gas consumption which is costing us approximately £10 per day or £300 per month in gas (9000 Kwh per month ish)
I have shopped around for the cheapest tariff (currently with SSE on their Collective 1 Year Fixed v6).
It is a newly converted barn single level, open plan 100meter squared (so it’s never going to be economical to heat, but still!) and has under floor heating throughout (nothing else other than heating/hot water runs on gas)
We have read all of the dos and don’ts in relation to under floor heating and have the thermostats set at 18.5 degrees off temp, and 20 degrees on (on is only 3pm to 8pm) but yet we’re still consuming anywhere from 24 m3 to 30m3 of has per DAY!
I’m sure we shouldn’t be using this much gas (but haven’t lived in a property of this size or had underfloor heating before) so does anyone have a similar property/heating system that could confirm what sort of money you are spending on gas per month, or any other advise / suggest????
Thank you 🙏

You could do an audit of what it is using per hour when it is on and when it is set back/ off. Check the gas used per hour.
Try reducing the off temperature and see if that makes a difference. Our off or set back temperature is 14 but that is on a conventional heating system. Also five hours on is relatively long. You could reduce the length of time it is on. We had underfloor heating a while back and it held its heat really well. Can’t remember what we had it set at though. Sorry.0 -
Hi, it is using approximately 2meters cubed per hour (already checked that
)
The issue with the ufh is the warm up times are so long so we have to have it on for that length of time to get it to lift the temperature 1 degree or so so it is warm for when we return from work at 6.pm. Once it reaches temperature it is great at retaining the heat but it but takes an age to get there so the boiler is pretty much on constantly at the time when the thermostats are calling for heat (3-8pm) I have tried to lower the temps too but it didn’t really make any difference to consumption but we were very cold.0 -

I am a little confused - the above is from your first post which gives 5 hours yet your last post is 2 m3 an hour. That gives 10m3 a day - 110 kwh.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
The reason for the anomoly i suspect is because even when the heating is ‘off’, it will still come on if any one of the 11 thermostats in the house drop below their set back temp which is 18.5 degrees (which will of course happen throughout the night and whilst we are out of the property at work)0

Is there a timer/programmer for the boiler ? Is this set to ON rather than TIMED ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

I don't know enough about gas heating but your back up hea5 is very high. Ours is 10 degrees. Your heating must be on 100% of the time just now.0

I can’t see any settings on the boiler (there is just a dial for temp and a dial for on/off) but the thermostats are stopping the boiler when they reach temperature (and are working correctly specifically in relation to them coming on when the temp drops below 18.5 even when ‘off’)0
