Leaving Virgin Media for another provider, is it easy to switch?

Been with Virgin Media for over 10 years but my current deal is expiring in March and they are not budging in terms of giving me a good deal. I currently pay around £41 and it is going to shoot up to £52 per month because I have a retention deal expiring.
Contract ends on March 12th, I'm thinking of switching to plusnet but am a total noob when it comes to switching. I understand I have to give Virgin 30 days notice, so if Virgin get cut off on March 12th, when do I get plusnet to install their service? Plusnet say the phone will be ready on the day but Broadband will take 5 days.

Plusnet use Openreach to get service to your home, VM have their own network, so you could get Plusnet in and working before you switch off the VM service if you wanted to...the only 'connection' between the two company's would be if you wanted to port your phone number from VM to Plusnet, and it's not clear if you even have a phone service with VM, and if you do perhaps the phone number is unimportant.
If you haven't had any services over the Openreach 'wires' in some considerable time (maybe never) then personally I would get a date from Plusnet that is earlier than the VM switch off date, that way if the Plusnet installation hits a snag , and takes a while to fix, you would still have VM ....really the only switching part is of the phone number when it comes to moving from VM to other providers0 -
I do currently have my phone line with Virgin, I didn't even know I could get my existing number carried over, I would prefer that.
So if my Virgin cut off date is 12th March, I'll get plusnet to install the broadband on 5th March.
Cheers for the advice.0 -
I kinda assumed the phone number ( if you had one with VM ) wouldn't be important, if it is , then porting the number may well have to be done on the day that Plusnet say they will provide service, so no overlap.
It's likely that there won't be any problem getting the Plusnet/OR line in anyway ( although anything may have happened in the lat 10 years, so in some respects, as we know the number is important , I would just let Plusnet know the earliest date they should aim for is 12 March and that you want to keep (port) your phone number.
PN asking VM to port your number to them should in effect cease your VM phone service, but as its VM and they offer stand alone broadband you may want to also tell them yourself to cancel broadband on the 12 March, otherwise the phone service may go but the broadband stays and they cheekily say you have started a new broadband only contract, so let them know around 12 February that you want to cease broadband0 -
I got my virgin number moved to NowTV
I had my virgin B.B. running for a week overlap0 -
