finishing hemlock stair parts

Just installed new hemlock baserail, spindles and handrail. Was going to do base and spindle in white and darken up the handrail.
Now thinking the wood looks quite nice as it is, so any advice on how to finish the wood without making it any darker and loosing its natural effect?
Oil/varnish/wax?
Wood is sanded and smooth.
PS Want a matt/sheen not glossy finish.
Cheers

We replaced our stairs handrail with a hemlock one. We use clear Briwax from toolstation occasionally to keep it looking good. HTH0

Just applied to bare wood with cloth and then buffed up when dry. After 3 or 4 months we applied another coat and buffed it up again.0
