What is the best way to remove textured paint.
We have a child on the way and the spare room has been painted from top to toe in textured paint(!!!!!!). Are products like Nitromours suitable for this, and are there any health risks (asbestos) i should consider (I doubt if the textured paint is more than 20 years old though). Or do you have any other suggestions.

The only way to remove the texture is to flatten it. Can you sand it down? Possibly hire an oscillating hand held sander. The oscillating action will help stop you digging a circle in the paint/ wall. Try on a lower part of the wall (below eyeline) untill you are comfortable using it. As an artist im not aware of any paint product having asbestos in it. Old paints can sometimes contain lead, If creating any kind of paint dust it is safer to wear a face mask and have plenty of airflow for the room. I think Nitromorse will make a big sludgy mess that will take forever to wipe off.
Hope this helps.A BEE STUNG MY BOTTOM... NOW MY BOTTOMS BIG :think:0 -
Dr. Paint:
Most texture paint is water-soluble and can be soften by soaking with warm water or stripped with a conventional paint stripper. As with removing wallpaper, you must be careful not to allow the surface to get too wet and damage the drywall paper.

Hi i know its not exactly removing the paint but i had a similar problem in my spare room and i just got a plasterer in to skim the offending wall. Didn't cost much and now i can just paint on a nice smooth wall. Just a though as another option.0

I used a steam wallpaper stripper for removing textured paint. It took some time but it did work.Titch0

Hi,
I am facing the task of decorating our hallway and stairs, unfortunately the previous owner saw fit to use a sand textured type paint.
I've seen a few contradictory tips on the internet, including the ones below on how to remove/paint over it.
Does anyone know the best option or have any advice for someone with limited DIY skills.
Thanks0 -
Nitromors is for removing oil based paint from wood and metal, whatever you do don't put that on your plastered walls. as it's acidic. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

A little advice to people, using that much nitromors or any kind of paint stripper inside is dangerous (the fumes people, the VOC fumes!)
If you've textured paint issues, either skim over it, line the walls or use a "smoothover" from polycell - it's like an easy-to-use skim-filler.
If in doubt though - ask a professional!0
