I want to check my credit score but I have done this before and got bombarded with letters

Options
Hi
I am wanting to check my credit score and I am worried that I will get bombarded with debtors letters. This has happened to me many years ago when I did a free credit score check.

I have mental health issues and am under the care of a mental health team. I am really paranoid that if I run an Experian or likewise company credit check, I will be sent letters from debtors etc. This I will not be able to cope with and I am very anxious to look into what my credit information is.

Can anyone advise me on how I can proceed or can anyone give me any information on how I can complete a credit score check where I won't get debtors sending letters to my current address or debt collectors turning up at my home. This makes my anxiety extremely high at the thought.

Thank you for any help on this matter.

  • Firstly ignore the score as it’s not a real number.

Secondly your details will be on all the CRA’s anyways and will be accessible by anyone that runs a search on you - you don’t need to request a credit report for that to happen.

If you owe money why aren’t you making arrangements to get them paid off?

Why is it you want to check your score ?

The score is just a number, no 1 else can see it but you.

    Lenders see your history.
  • I've been homeless for a few months now after my mum passed away of cancer recently. I dedicated the last three years of my life caring for her full time. This had a massive affect on my mental state and I was obsessed with my mums welfare and sort of ignored my own issues which I am now trying to put right. I lived with my mum and now I have to try get my life back on track and focus on getting back into my own home and getting my self sorted out. I had a very well paid job that I had to give up to take care of my mum and racked up debts that to be honest, I didn't deal with as I was dealing with all my mums affairs. It's a case of putting someone else before myself and I'm only just now able to focus on my self and get info on what I owe. My mum meant more to me than anything and now shes passed away I know she'll be looking down on me wanting to get my life on track and with the supprt of my mental health support network I am trying to achieve some normality in my life.
  • Sorry to hear about your mum and about your situation.

You can use MSE credit club (for the Experian report - see moneysavingexpert.com/creditclub), Clearscore (for the Equifax report, see clearscore.com), and Noddle (see noddle.co.uk for the Callcredit report) to check your credit reports. You can also see the scores, although these aren't important. No debtor will chase after you if you sign up to the above sites. However, if you don't want to get marketing material from them, make sure you don't tick the box that allows them to send you offers when you sign up.

Perhaps it's worth giving a call to StepChange (stepchange.org, a charity) regarding your debt? Or, if you don't feel OK to do that yet, please speak with your mental health team about this - they can signpost you to other services that can help with debt-related problems.

    Best of luck.
