M&S Abroad, trousers unwearable, impossible to complain.

Options
I bought a pair of black jeans while traveling in Kualar Lumpur. They were the most expensive jeans I've ever bought, but I'm very tall and live in Cambodia and so have trouble finding the black denim which is kind of my look.

I the next day I wore them and all over these little threads pulled, like little cotton loops coming off, though I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary. Next day I was leaving but there was just time to take them back. However, that night I had an accident, dislocated my arm, ended up in hospital and ended up just forgetting about it.

I decided to just wear them, as it's not so bad, I can snip off the worst of it each time I wash them. One day I dropped a little sauce on the leg while eating, and so rubbed it off with my thumbnail, and was shocked to see the dye basically disappear from the area I rubbed. I kept rubbing a wider area thinking it's a loose dye that will just, kind of blend or something, but no, ended up with a large white patch. So I hand washed them, but the whole area seemed to whiten as well. They look so bad now they're not even wearable casually. This is all in the space of a month.

Well I know I can't have any refund, but I thought I'd let them know as these need to come off the shelf. The website for malaysia is https://global.marksandspencer.com/my/ but it has a dropdown list that doesn't include Malaysia. The contact page on the global website is at https://global.marksandspencer.com/contact-us/ but just shows clothes, and doesn't actually have any way to contact them.

So I came to the UK site and found a contact form. I filled it in just thinking, it's a UK company and it's basically telling them they need to review this product, it isn't fit for purpose, and I offered to send some pics so they can see what I mean.

Nothing back from them though. Not the end of the world, but I'm frustrated it was an expensive product and then was so hard to contact them.

  • Little point in contacting Marks & Spencer in the UK about an item you bought in Malaysia.

Is the item you bought even available in the UK?

Even if it is, you won't be getting a refund or replacement unless you contact the retailer you actually purchased from.

Contact your local MS store in Cambodia or the one in Malaysia where you purchased the goods. You went to Malaysia to buy jeans that may have been made in Cambodia?

Read up on your Malaysian consumer rights .

Just wonder based upon the country if they are not some fake M&S knockoff .
  • The branch in Malaysian will be a franchise and the UK cannot deal with it. I had the same problem with an item from M&S in Gibraltar. Had to deal with Gibraltar.
  • Thank you for the replies. As I explained in the original post, I know I won't get any refund. It's bad luck, I just want them to review this garment with a view to not selling it any more.

So I tried to contact M&S Malaysia and their contact page shows no contact at all, just products for sale (as I explained), and the global site site section doesn't have a link to Malaysia, so the UK was the only option.

Since I checked yesterday, there's a notice on the UK site https://www.marksandspencer.com that they are down and to try again in five minutes, but this is over 24 hours.

There is no M&S in Cambodia, an office and factory, but ironically they don't sell here.

I would have been OK with just a way to contact a Malaysia or the UK replying 'Thanks for letting us know, we'll look into it'. That's all I wanted. I'm just let down, such a large global chain and no reasonable contact or reply.

They have an office in Cambodia so your answer is there?

Do they sell the same product in the UK? Telling them to stop selling them may get your letter filed in the looney bin if they don't sell they product.

They'd only do that on the basis of receiving multiple complaints about this item. A single complaint such as yours would garner an, at most, polite acknowledgement of your concerns. No actual action will be taken to prevent future sales.
All this assumes that Marks & Spencer sell this item in the UK and that it is even a genuine M&S item..

Do you really expect Marks & Spencer in the UK to "review" an item you bought in Malaysia???

By all means bring your concerns to the original retailer you purchased from (by phone or by post if there is no online contact), but don't waste everyone's time contacting anyone in the UK simply because you are an ex-pat..

Addresses of stores in Kuala Lumpur:

    Sunway Velocity Mall Ground Floor
    Sunway Velocity Mall 112
Jalan Cheras, Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur
Suria KLCC Shop No. C28B Level Concourse
    Suria KLCC
Kuala Lumpur City Centre Kuala Lumpur
The Gardens/Mid Valley Lot F-201 First Floor
    The Gardens, Mid Valley City
    Lingkaram Syed Putra Kuala Lumpur
  • Fair enough. I thought it reasonable to contact the UK as the website and or purchasing might be centralised, or perhaps not. Though the UK website still has a notice saying they will be down for 'five minutes'.

I'll try harder to let the Malaysian side know of my woes.
