Seagate Portable Hard drive failed :( probably no other checks I can do? Said I can get replacement?

Options
Hi

I'd alot of stuff backed up on my Seagate Portable Hard drive (2 years old) was going to do another back up and the Computer isn't recognising the hard drive?

I rang Seagate, was told to download the SeaTools for Windows, done the Short Generic Test and it said Failed!

Was told to get replacement I have to send it back but don't want to as I've alot of personal/work info on it!

I'm sure there's nothing else I can do or try to recover anything? The hard drive is making a slight noise - so annoyed!!

    Data recovery service circa £500.
Unless a PC can see the drive you can do nothing .

Try another computer on the offchance.

But clicking fail dump / destroy it and buy a new one or return to Seagate under warranty .

If I return it will Seagate see my personal and work info?

I doubt it. They will test it to see if it is repairable. If it is they will carry out the repair, wipe it, QA it and either flog it as a refurb drive or use it as a replacement when somebody else has a warranty claim for a failed drive.

If its not repairable then it is scrapped.

At no time will they ever bother to look at the content. It will probably never go anywhere near a pc, just connected to test equipment.

I would weigh up the content and would you be happy with a very very slight chance of it being seen against the price of a new unit .

If you've it backed up to the drive then presumably.you have it on another source? Is it just the risk of it being seen you are concerned with?

Personally knowing how many times over the years I've dealt with external HDDs and it is the USB to SATA adapter in the caddy that has failed I would remove the hard drive from its case and either connect it directly to a PC via SATA cables or try another enclosure.

If it's a "portable external USB hard drive" then its likely there the whole USB connection is integrated with the disk and there is not any USB to SATA connection in the package as there would be in a simple disk caddy type arrangement.
As other have said and oft repeated on here unless your data is copied in at at least 3 separate places then is cannot be considered as being safe.

If you're that worried, just buy a new drive and destroy the old one so the data can't be recovered.
