And craigslist - Unless you are looking to rent by the hour or day

    Some landlords are worse.....

    Not all agencies are terrible.

    Artful (.... landlord....)
  • Nearly everywhere I have been( that has a local shop) has cards in the window advertising properties/rooms to let

Go to the area that you want to live and search shops or put cards up in shops yourself

    Good Luck

Arguably, but nevertheless most people renting still find it preferable to deal with them rather than significantly restrict their pool of potential homes by refusing, which is why I'm curious about OP's reason. If there is some ideological opposition, fair enough, but if it's due to some past bad experience, or they think an agent might be reluctant to let to them for some reason, the forum might be able to offer advice on those points as well. It would be a shame for OP to restrict themselves so significantly if there is some alternative.
  • As already suggested, the spareroom website is great if you are just looking for a room in a houseshare.
