Scotland inspiration please

Options
We'd like to go to Scotland mid august as kids keep saying they want to go. They say they want to go as it's beautiful, but I think they'd like to practice their Scottish accents! We have about 12 days. We're driving up from the south coast. Would love some itinerary ideas please about places to go, things to do, good routes to take.

2ad, 1 15yr old, 1 13yr old. We like to do some walking, but I'm talking an hour or 2 hill strolling on max 3 days. We're fine wandering round towns for a day. 1 ad v keen on single malt whisky. Museums ok for a couple of visits. Loch swimming would be fun. Edinburgh festival would be good for a couple of days. We like discovering new places, but would get bored having the whole holiday in 1/2 places.

Our only previous experience of Scotland was a trip to Crieff 20 years ago so would really appreciate some input on places you think we might enjoy in order for me to plan out a route.

Thanks all.

Unless you want a proper road trip with 4-5 stops trying to do as much as possible, but not much in detail you can do what you want with a couple of stops and you won't get bored.

Start near Edinburgh. Cheaper to stay out of town, use public transport.

Then move to somewhere around Loch Tay eg Aberfeldy, Pitlochry for a week or so.

Its central, has small towns with local facilities and if you are happy to do the driving great for getting to lots of other places on day trips.

Dundee not far, east to St Andrews, north for Aviemore and Cairngorms, west for Fort William, Ben Nevis etc.

There are enough distilleries around Loch Tay to do two a day for a week. So many Lochs you'll get bored looking at them!

Oban is a nice place. It has a distillery right in the town centre that does tours, and I think it's only about £8. You can go across to Mull by ferry. Fort William has a super little museum, donations welcomed. Around Loch Lomond is the conservation village of Luss, very pretty. Lovely old church, River walk, and a smoke-house which sells direct to the public. Not sure of naming other places as not sure how many miles you want to cover.

Agree with this. Edinburgh will be mobbed; maybe stay in Falkirk/Stirling and travel in to Edinburgh. Also gets you to Dundee/St Andrews and then Inverness and maybe Oban and Loch Lomond. The West of Scotland's immensely more scenic than the northeast.
