First time buy, damp and other issues

Looking for some advice please
My partner and I are in the process of buying our first house but our survey has come back that the property has damp in several spots and further investigation is required. It states that the DPC has likely failed but it's evident to the surveyor that damp proof works have been done recently (how recently we don't know).
There are other issues also but this is our main concern as we are worried we will be buying into a money pit!
Fireplaces have been blocked up with no ventilation which we beleive is the main cause of the problem but it's not just in those areas.
Where would we stand if work needed doing? We're not cash rich so don't have heavily lined pockets to do loads of work but we do very much like the property but we not only have to think about the here and now but also the future as this is just a stop gap property which we plan to sell on in five to ten years time and we don't want something that's going to deteriorate in condition or cost a bomb to maintain!

It sounds like your surveyor wasn't the best.
What kind of survey was it? Was it a big company who did it? If it was me I might insist the surveyor went back and at least have an indication as to what might cause the damp.
A lot of damp is caused by easily fixable things. Blocked gutters and drains, Lack of ventilation. Leaking windows etc. But also it could also be structural damage.
The location and extent of the damp should give clues. But frankly that's what surveyors are for. Ask them for more details!0 -

Build up of ground levels that have breached the DPC is quite common. It is highly unlikely that a DPC has failed - More likely it has been breached externally or there are other reasons giving rise to penetrating damp. Badly installed cavity wall insulation on a property that is in an exposed location for example.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
