Motorcycle Insurance - The next PPI type scandal?

Hi all, recently I've been looking to insure one of my motorcycles, however; when merrily looking for quotes a number of insurance companies/agencies/brokers are adding on what they call "free" extra's, for example UK and EU breakdown cover, helmet cover, etc. Although saying "free" I have noted this has increased the cost of quotes some by over £70 for a year compared to others which do not include "free-bees".

I did try with one insurance company ask to see if I could remove it as it is not required as bike will not be used abroad and I've already got breakdown cover but was told it would make no difference to the premium!

One insurance company rep I spoke to said for me to do an online quote as he could not remove the cover manually but said it may be possible online which would save £68.00. Unfortunately, due to make and model of my bike (old) it cannot be found on any online quote sites when searching for the make/model so I cannot get an online quote.

My concern is with this is Motorcycle insurers are forcing cover onto unsuspecting customers which may not need it under the pretence it is free when we all know added extras are never free as they have to be paid from somewhere.

So, my questions are:

1 Does anyone know of motorcycle insurance companies which don't try to tie you into cover you don't need?

2. Is this going to be the next PPI type scandal where customers are being forced into higher cost cover by insurers which are pretending extras are free but is really part of the cost of cover meaning without "extras" insurance may be cheaper?

Views and any help would be appreciated :)

I am insured with Hastings Direct and I do not have any extras that I don't need, they were also the cheapest of all the quotes I checked, for the last 2 years.

What you call 'extras' are included, so they're not extras, but part of the comprehensive policy they're offering. You can't remove them and get it cheaper, simply because, they are not extras.
How does the cost compare if you bought a cheaper policy, then added optional extras?

You're free to buy a policy elsewhere.

Sorry no, it's not a scandal
