First Direct "New Customer"

My son is looking to open an account with 1st direct and switch another account to them.

He had an account with them for about 5 months which was closed in December 2014, because there were (non financial )difficulties in getting it set up.

I can't find how 1st Direct define a "New Customer" in the T&Cs.

Does any one what their definition is?

it means they will look in their records for your son's details and if found and if shows had an account previously then won't be a new customer

They're renowned for having the strictest definition, as per https://www1.firstdirect.com/1/2/banking/switching-bank-accounts:
Sorry, we can only offer this to people who haven't previously held an account with us

If he just wants the switch bonus there are easier bank accounts Halifax for one for £135 or more, read T&C's (that's if he's never been with them before recently)

FD are a good bank but give you nowt only a decent regular saver, of course they give you prezzies for switching but cash is king I reckon.

They've recently abandoned the "prezzies" and gone back to good old cash!
