  • Depends on the Department - every pay system is different! And most are doing away with increments in favour of PRP.

Which Dept are you going to?

(HR Manager of a Govt. Dept ;))

It's for Office of National Stats

Pretty certain theirs is PRP - ie a little increase each year for inflation and then an additional amount depending on the rating you get in your annual appraisal.

    Good luck! ;)

Generally you get an annual pay rise made up of 2 parts, your annual increment as you move from the bottom to the top of the pay scale the the grade (a process that can take 15-20 years) and a cost of living increase to allow for inflation.

The annual increment can either be a "spine point" - steps along a predefined scale (the pay spine/scale) or a %age increase (either a flat % or varying how far you are from the top). This increase can be either be 1 spine/year or variable subject to performance appraisal.

The cost of living is negotiable & may or may not bare soem relationship to cpi/rpi

However unless a multi-year is agreed the system can & does change every few years and, eg, in my area (MoD) this year & next there was no cost of living increase, only an annual increment.

In addition there will probably be a bonus scheme. The chances are it will be an unmitigated disaster & despised by all & only exists as a method of reducing pension liabilities (bonuses aren't pensionable) and meeting treasury demands that some form of performance related pay exists

IIRC pay rises are in august

salary is paid on the last working day of the month
  • Congratulations London on achieving EO after such a short time. I read your other topic on the jobseeking forum. I used to work for HMRC and have friends that still do, everything has changed, when I left the powers that be were cracking down on everything, it started with the introduction of LOMR, work being constantly checked (which I agree with) and a big brother type environment. I left as a result of depression after six years, now my friends tell me it is even worse, there are even more gargantuan methods of working, little flexibility, my friends feel flexi isn't even the flexi we once knew and loved. I'm not trying to put you off, just making you aware things have changed and to be on your guard for situations like this when you get a nice shiny new job in the CS. Good luck on your search and I wish you all the best.

  • Siren, yes, i know what you mean. Still have a lot of Friends in CS - seems like it's going on everywhere. Especially in DEFRA - loads of people are leaving and it's not a happy place to be right now, or so I'm told.

That said, I always enjoyed working there and was always busy, etc, etc. so have no problems with the perceived changes. On ex-colleague of mine who has 30= years in, says that everything int he service goes in cycles and that the current climate is just part of that circle; cutting things right back, only to find that they don't have enough people, ultimately to get the work done, which leads eventually to a recruitment drive.

As an aside, I find it pretty grim that the papers; red tops and the Daily hate all take great pleasure in rubbishing the Civil Service. Yes, there are a few bad apples in the service, as there are in any large company or organization - but my experiences were that 99.9% of the people who are civil servants are bloody good people who do an excellent job!

Register yourself with Civil Service Gateway (sorry can't remember web address but if you google it it will come up) - you will then be sent an email every time there is a civil service vacancy that matches your requirements.
I'd love to be a civil servant if only for all the free days off to play sport and then I could officially sail for them too on their sailing and racing yachts :D
  • Horace, yes it is nice. Pretty much all of my friends who work in the private sector can't believe that as a Civil Servant you get privilege days! Maunday Thursday, love it. NOt to mention sports day. So many happy memories!

But it isn't all about that. The work can be very interesting as well. But it's the people, there are some pretty amazing people who work in the CS. I've made so many good friends there, I really just want to get back. Should never have allowed myself to be outsourced really. It's not often you feel like you belong at a place of work, but I really did feel that.

Still, this time next year, I will be back there.
  • Already on the CSRG! And applying!
  • Just had a heads up that a job in the Civil Service has come up thats pretty much bang on what I was doing before and what I would like to do again. So have just bashed out an appo. I should at least *hoping* get an interview.................

Well done, there are usually jobs going in the MHRA (based in Vauxhall) and I spotted some at the Office of Fair Trading too. (MHRA tend to advertise on their extremely bad website). I have been told by my chap who works for the MHRA that the place to avoid is the Food Standards Agency (his mate works there) as there are no opportunities for promotion.

    Hope this helps?

I have had a job offer today, only I am a tad confused - I applied for a job paying £21K but have been offered one for £16K subject to review after a month - I want it but not at £16K because it is a £2K drop compared to my old job but considerably more than JSA!
