Youtube Premium

I've got a free trial of youtube premium at the moment. On the Youtube Music app I wondered if it's possible to just download the music rather than the music video? Because obviously video will take up alot more storage on my phone than just the audio would.

Why download it from YouTube at all?

Get the artist name and track details, and buy it from an audio-only source outwith YouTube.

Buy music individually, how last century...:D
You can download to your device.
YT music and Google Play music will eventually merge and just become YT Music. Not to be confused with YouTube.
YouTube premium is looking to emulate Netflix, eventually, with original content etc and no adverts.
Not to be confused with YouTube....;)
I think if you get it now you will get both services for the one lower subscription.
My music play subscription, just included YTM and YTPremium automatically.
My favourite music streaming service is Deezer, but Google comes a close second.

Won't the quality from a compressed YT video be worse than, for instance, a CD, CD-quality source from outwith YT?

If all you want is the audio, why not consider Spotify premium? Cheaper than YT, especially with the initial offers, will download and store audio locally so that you can play it offline. The free android version is a bit naff, but premium looks OK.

The music isn't all from a video on the music service.

Unless you have the equipment and pretend to be an audiophile and have recently had your ears dewaxed, I doubt you would notice any difference. For the vast majority the music is good enough.

Pay twice as much for Tidal or Qubos for lossless music and get a smaller catalogue and still suffer with bad equipment, placement and hearing. All streaming services will have a negative if you look for it. Me? I'd rather just enjoy the music than question it.

OH would like to download the audio from lengthy YouTube videos to listen to out and about on an iPhone. This is because YouTube is if effect hosting podcasts, the video part being just a computer animated cartoon. The content is too long for the usual MP3 ripper sites to work.

Can YouTube Premium do the above? Or, can it at least allow download of non-music videos in compressed format that could be listened to on the train?

You can download videos for off line viewing and these will continue to play in the background while using other apps or your screen is off.......So she will be able to just listen.
It's probably the main reason for paying for it. Personally it doesn't offer me anything and I would be happy with just Play/YT music. I've been given it free with my Google Play music sub, but haven't used it yet.
Get the free trial and see if it suits first.

OH is already able to stream sound with screen off, just only while online.
Hmm, but Premium costs about double a 4GB monthly data allowance so moving from PAYG to a monthly deal will be cheaper. Can't see the logic of Premium costing so much, it's worth a couple of quid IMO.
