    Thanks all. He is a typical 11 year old who loves maths and into computer games ,unfortunately not a scout.
    I thought a variety of this sort of stuff would spark something.
    Like most kids his age he will probably suss how to use it just by looking at it

    Aaaah, memories of my teenage years being abandoned in the middle of the welsh hills with an OS map, compass and the coordinates of base camp.

    Using a compass is a sensible skill to have, remember if he's older and gets into something like hill walking or even off road biking (to an extent) where there is no phone reception, knowing how to use a map and compass is invaluable even if only to know which direction to walk in without having to resort to using the sun/stars
