Person borrowed car, got PCN - malicous.

My dad allowed a relative visiting the UK to borrow his second car while he and his GF were here (long story, but thank god they are finally gone) but while they were here they got a council PCN that they quite pointedly did not tell him about or pay; the original discounted charge to them was £25, but now HE has to pay £50 for their PCN.

It's a worry now how many more parking charges they have been racking up; I know for a fact that this person has a mountain of parking fines in his own Country, so now all we can do is wait and see how many more come through the letterbox. It could be hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

Surely this can't be right?

Give them the relatives name as the driver. The ppc won't like it but that's their problem.

If it is a council parking charge, you need to head to a web site called Pepipoo as they specialise in council charges. Read a few posts to see what sort of info you need to provide and then sign up using a NON Hotmail address

OK, I can read your question, but what are you saying that can't be right?

It certainly isn't right that the relative racked up these charges and left the RK to pay them.

The RK should chase the driver.

Whether it is right or not that the keeper becomes responsible for the driver's transgressions - that is a question better answered on Pepipoo.com who are better able to deal with council tickets.

Sign up to Pepipoo with a gmail email address.

Because it is a council-issued PCN. the owner of the vehicle is liable for any fines the driver (that is to say, the person who is borrowing the vehicle) gets. In this case the two people in question have turned out to be a pair of nasty lying toads.

I cannot understand how an innocent person can be liable for debts or fines accrued deliberately by another person. They had permission to use the car (although as it turns out the GF lied to my dad''s insurer and claimed to have had a UK driving license for 20 years - so her insurance was invalid) but they've been hiding their fines. I know there was at least one other fine (bus gate) which my dad knew about and talked to them about, but I'm not sure they even paid that one.

It's not the £50 that is a problem, it's the worry that there could be a stack of accumulated fines for which my dad will be legally liable as the owner of the vehicle. He is the victim of a pair of spongers.

If he'd known there was a single outstanding fine, he would have forbidden them to use the car and he would have paid it off immediately.
