  • This is my first message here! Can't find where to start -- sorry!! Help appreciated!
Two things ... reading on this site, about Barclay Cards's 6.9% for the life of balances, I rang them just now. It is actually better than that: 5.9% !!! So I have done my transfer from RyanAir.com (MBNA) which is charging me TWENTY!!!!!!!% at the moment!!

Secondly, I have taken tyour advice, Martin, and hopped from one 0% card to another for several years now. The result is credit scoring which is looking bad! Particularly as Cards I have long since closed (back to 1998!), are still there AND SHOWING ME THEIR CREDID LIMITS!!! Result: no-one will now give me a new card!

Comments and advice muuuuch appreciated :-)

You should contact the credit companies which are still showing on your credit report and ask them to mark it as "SETTLED" and to remove the credit limit.

It's important to make sure the old cards are really closed. Cutting them up is not enough and sometimes not even requests to close them properly get actioned. Look at your credit report and make sure they say "Settled". If so the credit limits do not count towards your total. If not then contact the firms involved and get them closed properly.

Once closed they will then stay on your history for 6 years. That's not necessarily a bad thing as they show future lenders that you managed your debts responsibly and made your repayments on time (if you did). Having no past history at all is bad news.

I suggest you read up on the Credit Rating articles (see the blue box above) to make sure you understand the basics and see if there is anything you can do to improve them.

It could be you have simply been overdoing it and you need to cut back for a while to give your rating time to recover. I hope if your debts are real ones then you made use of the 0% periods you enjoyed to repay much of them, or if they were not real (ie stoozing) then repaying them should present no problem.

i applied for my barclaycard about 2 years ago and got the standard card (not intital - next up) In Jan after a couple of years ofgood practice including spending full and paying off they upped my limit from 2K to 6K and sent me a gold card.

sneekily i applied for a mastercard - split the limit and used both at 2.9% balance transfers.

    thank you very much barclaycard!

if u r a customer of barclaycard for more than a year and have run ur account well, then you can call them ask for a gold or platinum card depending upon ur earnings. i got my platinum card like that. hope this helps.
