Charged for going over limit due to bank charge?

I don't think much happened other than when the OFT said they wouldn't take any of the card providers to court if they didn't charge over £12 for overlimits or late payments so they predictably all set their charges at £12.
It was quite a long time before that. A big consumer campaign which was intended to effect voluntary change, with the threat of legislation if they didn't comply. Mainly around bank accounts - you paid a cheque which wasn't cleared as you didn't have enough funds. They then addded an unpaid item charge, which took you into overdraft and hit you with an unauthorised overdraft charge. If they had cleared the cheque in the first instance, you would only have an unauthorised overdraft charge. The campaign was to ban charges on charges. If the only reason you incurred a charge was because of a previous charge they had imposed the second charge shouldn't be applied.0 -
Back when Egg was a card provider, they used to send a message to the customer to say, that their minimum payment, would not be enough to prevent a customers account from going over the limit and they should make an additional payment.
I also agree a £20 charge for going over by £1.50, is worth contacting them about to see if they will reduce or remove it as a gesture.0 -

By the sound of it, that mightn't be such a bad thing.0 -
Let us know what they say0

So I can challenge charges ?? Wow I just assumed it was my own fault when I went 2p over my limit and got charged £12 for it by barclaycard. Funny thing is I actually cleared the balance that day but the payment hadnt cleared yet so I just assumed it was my own fault and to learn from it.0

You would like to think the OP would return with the outcome, what are the odds
If it’s a first offence then they may waive the charge0 -

"Challenge" is the wrong approach. Grovel, plead, say how silly you are and they'll often waive a first charge. It doesn't work for repeat offenders however.0 -
