Bus lane fine wrong reg, what can I do now...

hoping someone might be able to help/ offer advice over what I should do next.
A number of months ago I received a pcn for driving in a bus lane in London in July from Lambeth council. I live in the Scottish highlands and was at home on the date, I checked the photos online realised a letter in the car reg was clearly different from mine (car is same colour and make) I appealed the fine and they wrote to me to say they had considered my appeal and I no longer had to pay the fine. Happy days!
About a month later I received a letter saying I hadn’t paid and the fine was doubling, I appealed again in writing stating they had already told me I didn’t have to pay and it was clearly a different reg, didn’t submit photos as I had the first time. Sadly I have misplaced the letter saying I was given the first appeal.
Again a few weeks later I got a letter saying the fine had gone up and I appealed online again.
Fast forward to today...and I have received a letter saying they have considered the evidence and I have not been given the appeal so I have to pay. I’m at a loss, I don’t want to pay as it clearly wasn’t me but I am also aware that they can take me to court...does anyone have any advice? I’m majorly stressed about getting a black mark on my credit rating (does that happen?) we desperately need to move house in the new year for school catchment reasons so I’m worried I won’t get another mortgage.
Does anyone have any experience in this area who could tell me what I can do now...
