How long should i wait to apply for second Amex?

I got the British Airways Premium Amex card back in November so i could get the 25,000 bonus points for spending £3000 in 3 months and the 2 for 1 voucher for spending £10,000 in 12 months. Well i have spent £9700 on it so far in just over 2 months so only £300 off getting my 2 for 1, so i was thinking of getting another Amex card for the bonus either Gold or the Low APR one as they both have bonuses.

Should i wait a bit long with only having this card for just over 2 months? (Balance is only on just over £1000, limit is £1500)

  • What does their eligibility checker say?

It says 'You're unlikely to be approved for a card at this time.' but it said that when i tried for the last Amex and it was unable to give an instant decision when i applied but still got accepted after a few days.
  • If you don't have any up-coming credit applications then it probably doesn't hurt to make another application, particularly if the previous Amex application is your only search in the last few months. If the eligibility checker says you're unlikely to get the card (particularly the one on Amex's own website) then I might hold off however. Generally, I'd recommend 3-6 months between applications, particularly if you have previously been unsuccessful.
  • I'd wait at least 3 months after the account was opened.

Amex won't consider any further credit during the first 3 months, I would imagine a new card would be considered further credit.

You have already spent £9700 in just over two months on a card with a £1500 credit limit that you applied for last month (November)?

The unofficial advice that you'll most likely see if you Google it is 3 - 6 months for the same card or immediately for a different card and a max of 2 - 6 cards depending on the advice you're reading: Two years ago I got a green charge card and then immediately applied for a Platinum credit card and got that too but with a low credit limit of £1000.

Yeah, hopefully they will increase the limit when i try after 3 months, lucky with Amex when you make a payment to your account it becomes available instantly.
  • I was approved for a second card after a year.
