Australian bank charges

Hi, I have recently sent a cheque for £70 to someone in Australia, last night I received an e-mail from them saying that the cheque had been dishonoured and that their bank (ANZ) had charged them $255.85 (£120.20) and they now want us to pay the charges plus the £70. We have recently moved back to the U.K from France and during the move we neglected to check if we had sufficient funds in our account to honour this cheque (we went overdrawn by around £35) and have been charged by our bank (Alliance & Leicester) already, but the charges by ANZ are completely disproportionate to the original amount of £70, I am fully aware that this is my fault and I don't want the Australian to be out of pocket but we are not just talking a couple of pounds here. I have asked the Australian to send detailed evidence of the charges. If anyone out there has any advice it would be grayefully received. Thanks, Sid
