Wireless Connections

I had my PC set up with Netgear and was able to connect to it by using my laptop. (this was all very kindly setup for me by Albertross).

I have now moved into my mums while waiting for my new house and all my things are in storage bar my laptop and my netgear. Albatross said that when I was in the midst of moving I would just change the ISP logon and password to that of my mums and pluf in my netgear to her PC. Now that I have moved in and connected my netgear I am unable to connect to the internet. Both the PC and laptop recognise my network and say that I have connected. I have since found out that my mum gave me the wrong password.

How do I sort this out as I can't get onto the internet to now change the settings for my router. I don't have any of my passwords or keys as they are all in storage although I do have a good idea of what they are.

Any help, I don't think Albatross is on-line at the mo and could do with getting my laptop up and running so I don't have to keep using my mums office.

you will need to enter into the modem settings and change the login/userr password etc that they have stored, if you connect it to your PC via USB cable or another cable you should be able to access the modems properties if not give google a quick search

If I reset the netgear, you mention passwords and stuff. How do I get onto the router setup. At the moment I can't get on the setup screen. If I reset it will it allow me on.

I only need my ISP logon details don't I.

I have all the setup things written down as they were before.

    Or is there another way?

You don't "get onto the internet to change the settings for my router" you need to connect the Netgear to your PC using the Ethernet cable and enter http://192.168.0.1 into your browser and then enter your mothers username/password to connect.

I don't have any of my passwords or keys as they are all in storage although I do have a good idea of what they are.

I assume that you will be using the Netgear to replace your mothers as only one device can be connected to the line.

Edit: You can't use your ISP's details at your mothers property, as they are specific your your old line.

  • You shouldn't need to access the internet to be able to change the settings on your router.

Connect the router to your PC via an ethernet cable.

Goto start > run type in cmd and press enter

When the command prompt loads, type in ipconfig /all and then note down the number next to gateway. Open up an internet explorer page and goto http://192.168.1.1 or whatever then 'number' was for your gateway. You can then change the username/password that you use to connect to your ISP.

Hey Expresso that was a bit uncalled for.

I couldn't get the PC to reboot for you information and then had to change a nappy.

Anyway, thank you all those that helped, I have now got both machines up and running. you are stars.

I managed to get onto the Netgear website from the PC and get the ip router setup from their knowledge base link, I couldn't get it to work by typing it in directly.
From there I changed the password and all was happy.
